Mississippi Whole School

Green Elementary is an active participant in the Mississippi Whole Schools (MWS) Arts Program, a statewide initiative designed to strengthen learning through the arts. As part of this program, the school integrates arts‑based strategies into everyday instruction, helping students engage more deeply with academic content while building creativity, confidence, and critical‑thinking skills.
Through MWS, teachers at Green Elementary receive ongoing professional development in arts integration, allowing them to weave visual arts, music, drama, movement, and creative writing into core subjects like reading, math, science, and social studies. This approach supports multiple learning styles and helps students make meaningful connections across subjects.
The program is visible throughout the school in several ways:
- Arts‑Integrated Lessons — Classroom teachers use drawing, role‑play, music, and hands‑on creative activities to reinforce academic standards.
- Collaborative Projects — Grade levels participate in cross‑curricular art projects that showcase student learning in both the arts and academics.
- Performances & Exhibits — Student artwork, performances, and displays highlight how the arts are embedded in learning throughout the year.
- Teacher Training — Staff attend MWS workshops and coaching sessions to strengthen arts‑based instructional practices.
- Community Engagement — Families and community partners are invited to celebrate student creativity through events, showcases, and schoolwide arts activities.
By participating in the Mississippi Whole Schools Arts Program, Green Elementary fosters a vibrant, creative learning environment where the arts are not an “extra” but instead they are a powerful tool for teaching, learning, and student growth. "This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency."
